An Email Evangelist
A staff friend of ours, Matt, shared a story about his mother, PattyAnn, recently. It came to the attention of the program team for our national conference (which takes place in July), and I’m creating a video to tell his story about his mom.
Here’s how Matt tells it:
My mother is 79 and a master at video games. Really. She loves playing video games. It started when I was in high school in the 80’s. An arcade opened up near our home and she got hooked on Ms. Pac-man, consistently posting the high score. Soon, she went on to the Game Boy, and when she discovered the Internet, we thought we were going to lose her for sure! She soon mastered all sorts of word, card and arcade games.
In August of 2007, I decided to hold an “intervention” with her and suggested she volunteer to answer spiritual e-mails from around the world that come in to Cru. As I had suspected, she was not overly enthusiastic about the idea of replying to e-mails from strangers but because I’m her favorite son she conceded with a lackluster, “All right, sign me up to answer one e-mail a week.”
To her surprise, she was hooked and began to request more and more e-mails. In just over five years she has answered 22,129 e-mails. Of those, 12,181 have responded (a response rate of 55%).
The average population of a city in the U.S. is 6,545. To date, dear old mom has had, at a minimum, a spiritual conversation with the population of nearly 3.5 U.S. cities without ever leaving the comfort of her own house. There are some 43,000 cities in the U.S. that are home to some 300,000 churches. My prayer is that the Lord will raise up more moms like mine to reach the world with the gospel. However, if he doesn’t, I wouldn’t put it past her doing it all by herself.
