April Ministry Update

Short Films at Big Break LA

Trying to start a spiritual conversation with a stranger is intimidating. It can be daunting even when you have a relationship with the person. For years, the Campus Ministry has offered spring break opportunities to help give training and experience in doing just that. One such opportunity was Big Break LA.

Fellow Jesus Film staff member, Liz, attended and offered training on how to use short films to start conversations. The students were excited to learn about a new way to approach people. The Jesus Film Media app has short films (there entitled “Conversation Starters”) on a variety of subjects to engage people’s hearts. After sharing a film you can ask: How did it make you feel? What themes do you see in this film? Can you personally relate to any of those themes? From there you can transition to how the themes relate to your story.

Students relayed that it was an easy, non-awkward way to strike up in-depth conversations with strangers. After training a few students, word got out and more wanted to learn how. So, students who had just learned how to use films were teaching others and going out on campus to do so.

Nick and Austin shared a film about self image with a girl on Long Beach campus. When she saw it, she immediately identified with the feeling of never being good enough, and being unsatisfied with everything. She told us the only satisfied person she knows was her Grandpa who recently passed away. We asked her if she wanted to know the truth that her Grandpa held to be true, and why he was content with his life. She was very open to it, and we were able to go through the booklet explaining the gospel with her. She asked questions and tried her best to fully understand it. At the end, she said she needed some time to think about it and was going to talk to a friend of hers, who was a Christian, about it more later. We prayed with her and sent her off to class!

Please pray:

  • Pray for the post-production (editing, coloring, sound, music, visual effects) of the short film “Nightwatch.”
  • Pray as a small team will be traveling to Europe to record some discipleship materials.
  • For our kids to grow in their faith, and see God draw close to them as they face challenges.

Praises

  • Our film school has wrapped up in the Middle East.
  • The shooting of “Nightwatch” went well!
